The tanks & rooms here

The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what Transitions RVA The Float Zone runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

🥚Float Pods

The classic enclosed capsule with a hinged lid. Deepest sensory deprivation; you lie down and pull the lid to.

🛁Float Rooms

The room itself is the vessel: no hatch, walk straight in. Great for claustrophobia and easier access.

From the reviews

What an amazing and relaxing time! The facility is super clean and very friendly! They have a post relax area, red light and ambiance is great to finish unwinding! This was my first float so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well 15 min in, I was fast asleep and just letting my body recover.

This was my first time floating ever. This location is actually run by a physician. The prep process was detailed, quick, and easy to follow. It allowed me to feel comfortable with the floating experience before I even got in.

I had an incredible experience! I booked last minute, their last open spot while I was already on the way and it was more than worth it. The owner was very knowledgeable and friendly! The facility was very clean! I was nervous with it being my first time in a pod but I immediately felt comfortable!

My first float at the Float Zone was amazing. The welcome video and tour made it easy to know what to expect. I booked a session with a friend and they accommodated both of us easily. My room was well equipped with everything needed and I selected my music in advance from the website.

Your first float at Transitions RVA The Float Zone

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
