The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what True REST Float Spa • Austin North runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

The classic enclosed capsule with a hinged lid. Deepest sensory deprivation; you lie down and pull the lid to.

Water & cleaning at True REST Float Spa • Austin North

Sanitation is the thing seasoned floaters care about most, and most directories never show it. Between every float, the salt water should be pumped through fine filtration and disinfected — salt alone is not enough. From True REST Float Spa • Austin North's own information: down to a 5-micron filter, UV sterilization, ozone, hydrogen peroxide.

The float-industry standard is turning the entire volume of water over at least three times between sessions through a 1–10 micron filter, paired with UV and/or hydrogen peroxide or ozone. If a center doesn't publish its process, it's fair to ask.

From the reviews

Such an amazing experience!!! 10/10 would recommend! Liz was amazing at the spa! You get in these pods and float for an hour. There are different options on how to experience your float. The water is the same temp as your body so I couldn’t feel it sometimes and felt like I was floating in the air.

I love going to True Rest Float spa. The floats help me meditate and come out feeling rejuvenated afterwards. They just opened a Vitality Suite which has a sauna, cold plunge and red light therapy which is just as good for the body and soul. Grab some tea and journal about your experience in the lounge on your way out.

I had a relaxing float today to the point that I started dozing off. It's hard to turn off your mind sometimes, and at some point I did for a little while. I realized I needed to prop the pod open several inches to help me breathe better, and even though I got a little chilly for a bit, I acclimated and was able to…

Very relaxing and beneficial if you enjoy meditation. My first float was excellent, but it wasn’t my wife’s favorite. I think it’s an acquired experience. Highly recommend trying it once to see if it’s for you. Like I said, it was very beneficial and relaxing for me. Customer service was excellent.

Your first float at True REST Float Spa • Austin North

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
