The tanks & rooms here

The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what Float Madison runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

🥚Float Pods

The classic enclosed capsule with a hinged lid. Deepest sensory deprivation; you lie down and pull the lid to.

🛁Float Rooms

The room itself is the vessel: no hatch, walk straight in. Great for claustrophobia and easier access.

From the reviews

The experience I had gotten from Float Madison was exactly what I wanted and what I was looking for. I’m new to the area, so I wasn’t sure at first if a deprivation tank was around here. Lo and behold in the center of the city lies a quaint little building that has such a thing.

I recently treated myself to a float on my birthday. I have floated one other time in the past and loved it. First of all, Float Madison is excellent with communication. They gave great directions to their free parking lot and informed me the day of through text that I could arrive early, if I'd like.

Floating has been a very beneficial thing for both my mind and my body! I discovered Float Madison late last year, and today I had my fifth float. It is a very unique meditative experience for me, and it also takes pressure off my joints that usually carry a lot of tension for me (mostly my hips).

Such a wonderful experience at Float Madison. A beautiful and homey facility, well maintained and clean. I was in a float room which was great for stretching before sank into a deep meditation. Lots of lighting options. The music was very relaxing. Looking forward to my next float!

Your first float at Float Madison

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
