Water & cleaning at Float in Vermont

Sanitation is the thing seasoned floaters care about most, and most directories never show it. Between every float, the salt water should be pumped through fine filtration and disinfected — salt alone is not enough. From Float in Vermont's own information: filters the full tank 3× between floats, UV sterilization, ozone, hydrogen peroxide.

The float-industry standard is turning the entire volume of water over at least three times between sessions through a 1–10 micron filter, paired with UV and/or hydrogen peroxide or ozone. If a center doesn't publish its process, it's fair to ask.

From the reviews

I've never floated before, but I'll be back! I put in the ear plugs, showered off, and stepped into the warm tub. I turned off the light and put the headrest under my head and laid back. At first, though I was flat on my back, the buoyancy supported me and I felt sort of like I was sitting in an armchair.

Weightless. Every muscle, tissue, bone relaxed. Your mind, body and soul melts away. Let your senses go. I had no idea that I could actually float without having to use any physical or mental effort. I can say that this was one of the best experiences I have ever had. The float tank is now part of my self care program.

Exquisite! The ultimate in relaxation and stress relief, floating in salt water (1200 lbs of it!) for an hour. Everything was just perfect, from the earplugs and headrest to the lighting and sound choices, to the helpful staff who explain the process and answer all your questions. I’ll definitely be back!

Your first float at Float in Vermont

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
