The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what Coastal Float Spa runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

🥚Float Pods

The classic enclosed capsule with a hinged lid. Deepest sensory deprivation; you lie down and pull the lid to.

From the reviews

This new addition to our area is like the superhero of relaxation! I took the plunge with a single float, and it was so fantastic that I went all-in with a multi-float package. Say goodbye to those stressful 45-minute rides to Wilmington – my future appointments are booked, and my stress levels are floating away! 🌊

Being 8 months pregnant and trying just about anything to relieve my back pain, my husband set up a Float Session for me. I was hesitant at first but Christy was very informative about the entire process beginning to end. You’re allowed to float with a friend which made me more comfortable for my first time.

Okay the float was fantastic! Very therapeutic. Some of us have floated in pool, lake, or Ocean but nothing compares. What to expect when arrive…a polite and professional interaction. You are required to fill out paperwork before entering the pod.

This is the most amazing float spa and I have floated at a few. The salt content seems higher and much more comfortable to me than the other spas I have visited. My whole body is buoyant and the best part is my neck actually relaxes while I float. I haven't had this kind of experience anywhere else.

Your first float at Coastal Float Spa

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
