The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what Bodymind Float Center runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

Water & cleaning at Bodymind Float Center

Sanitation is the thing seasoned floaters care about most, and most directories never show it. Between every float, the salt water should be pumped through fine filtration and disinfected — salt alone is not enough. From Bodymind Float Center's own information: UV sterilization, hydrogen peroxide.

The float-industry standard is turning the entire volume of water over at least three times between sessions through a 1–10 micron filter, paired with UV and/or hydrogen peroxide or ozone. If a center doesn't publish its process, it's fair to ask.

From the reviews

Been going to this little place for years and when I tell people they still don’t know it ever existed. Great alternate to massages or spas if you’d rather just be by yourself. If you’re already great at relaxing floating is for you if you need to teach yourself how to relax this could be a great place to start.

I brought my elderly mother, with limited mobility, here for a Float and Salt Room experience, and everything about our visit was wonderful! Even with her needing to use a cane, she was able to easily get in and out of her tank because of the grab bars (not pictured below - mine was an open float tank).

Our whole team (At Home With Wellness practitioners and coaches) absolutely loved our salt room experience! We can highly recommend it to others. And, thank you so much Penny for kindly showing us the float tanks and explaining all about them. Update - we came back for our FLOATS and loved those as well!!!!

A must visit destination in Rochester. I went for the 90 minute couples float, and I was very impressed. Everything is very clean and organized. Parking was easy, and check in was straight forward. The actual float itself was phenomenal. It was like nothing I've experienced before.

Your first float at Bodymind Float Center

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
