The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what Ascend Wellness runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

Water & cleaning at Ascend Wellness

Sanitation is the thing seasoned floaters care about most, and most directories never show it. Between every float, the salt water should be pumped through fine filtration and disinfected — salt alone is not enough. From Ascend Wellness's own information: ozone.

The float-industry standard is turning the entire volume of water over at least three times between sessions through a 1–10 micron filter, paired with UV and/or hydrogen peroxide or ozone. If a center doesn't publish its process, it's fair to ask.

From the reviews

I discovered floatation therapy a few years ago in Atlanta and really enjoyed it. I was thrilled that Ascend Wellness brought floating to the Savannah area this year! I enjoy floating because it quiets the mind and relaxes the body--something I need after a long day of providing massage therapy to my clients.

Got an opportunity to use the float chamber. Krista is helpful, professional, wonderfully pleasant. My session was 30 minutes and I felt like I was floating on air. I have had serious soreness in my whole body and I found relief soaking in that water. Needless to say I'll be going back.

Ascend is one of a kind wellness center that caters to all your needs! The float pool is amazing for de stressing and it will leave your skin feeling super soft. I also tried cryotherapy for the first time. What an experience! It left me feeling revitalized and refreshed.

My girlfriend and I went in for the 30 min. Sensory Deprivation Chamber session, and Holy crap was this an amazing experience! I highly recommend going in with total darkness, and the ear plugs. Don't forget to breathe deeply through your nose as you're floating!

Your first float at Ascend Wellness

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
