The tanks & rooms here

The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what Altered States Wellness Richardson runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

No lid to close over you — the answer for anyone who feels boxed in. Open pools, open rooms, or pods whose door stays open.

Water & cleaning at Altered States Wellness Richardson

Sanitation is the thing seasoned floaters care about most, and most directories never show it. Between every float, the salt water should be pumped through fine filtration and disinfected — salt alone is not enough. From Altered States Wellness Richardson's own information: UV sterilization, ozone.

The float-industry standard is turning the entire volume of water over at least three times between sessions through a 1–10 micron filter, paired with UV and/or hydrogen peroxide or ozone. If a center doesn't publish its process, it's fair to ask.

From the reviews

Excellent all around!!! First, Makayla greeted us and checked us in. She answered our questions, gave us thorough instructions, offered us complimentary drinks, and was very friendly! The float tanks here are clean, beautiful, and are operated at such a high standard. The vitamin C shower is awesome too!

This place is incredible. It's so important to give your mind and body this type of break. This spa is clean, comfy, and beautiful. I will absolutely be making this a part of my routine. I did the 60 min float and the 60 min lab - and left with a membership.

I love this place and I enjoy introducing friends & family to Altered States Wellness! My sister-in-law was in town and I brought her in for a mother's day surprise. While I did a float (my favorite service), she did a sauna session + 60 minute Lab. She loved it and enjoyed trying something new!

I enjoyed this strangely new experience that I get the pleasure of discovering. The float was new and odd for me, but once you let go and relax it gets really nice. Great place to ease your mind and meditate on water. Lastly, I want to mention that the staff were so friendly and easy to talk to.

Your first float at Altered States Wellness Richardson

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
