Is a float tank clean?
It is a completely fair question — you are getting into a shared body of water. The reassuring answer is that a properly run float tank is one of the cleanest water experiences you can pay for, arguably cleaner than a public pool. Here is exactly how float sanitation works, and how to tell a diligent center from a sloppy one.
The short version: float water is protected by four things stacked together — the salt itself (so dense it is hostile to microbes), full-volume filtration (the entire tank passed through fine filters 3+ times between every float), UV light, and hydrogen peroxide or ozone — plus the fact that everyone showers before getting in. No single measure carries the load; together they make a genuinely clean float.
How float sanitation actually works
- The salt does real work. A tank holds roughly 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt, creating a brine far saltier than seawater. That extreme salinity is inhospitable to most bacteria and microorganisms — it is a sanitizing feature, not just what makes you float.
- Full-volume turnover between every float. This is the big one. Between each floater, the center pumps the entire volume of the tank through its filtration and sanitation loop a minimum of three complete times — often four. The water is turned over, not topped off.
- Fine filtration. Float systems typically filter down to about 1 micron (some run in the 1–10 micron range), which is finer than a lot of standard pool filtration and catches particulates you'd never see.
- UV light. As it circulates, the water passes a UV lamp that disrupts microorganisms without adding anything to the water.
- Hydrogen peroxide and/or ozone. These are the primary sanitizer chemistry in most tanks — effective and skin-friendly, and without the harsh off-gassing of heavy chlorine in an enclosed space.
- You shower first. Every floater rinses off oils, lotion, and makeup before entering, so less goes into the water to begin with.
Standards and regulation
The float industry has developed shared best practices — the Float Tank Association publishes water-quality and turnover guidance, and float systems are commonly held to the kind of standards used for pools and spas (NSF and industry water-quality benchmarks). Regulation varies by state: some jurisdictions regulate float tanks explicitly as pools or spas with inspection and testing requirements, while others are lighter-touch. The practical upshot is that most established centers run well above any legal minimum simply because their reputation depends on it — a single bad review about "salt scum" or a musty smell is expensive for a small business.
Questions to ask any center
You don't need to be an expert — just ask, and listen for a confident, specific answer:
- "How many full water turnovers do you run between floats?" (You want to hear 3 or more.)
- "What's your filter micron rating?" (1 micron is excellent.)
- "Do you use UV, ozone, or hydrogen peroxide?" (Ideally a combination.)
- "How often do you fully drain and refresh the solution?"
- "Do you test the water between floats?" (Peroxide level and pH.)
Green flags and red flags
Green flags: the center explains its process without hesitation, posts its sanitation details on its website, has visibly clean rooms and clear water, and smells clean (a faint mineral note, not chemical or musty). Red flags: vague or defensive answers, visible film or salt scum around the tank, a musty or chemical smell, or dirty towels and floors. Trust both the answers and your senses.
