The tanks & rooms here

The vessel type is the single biggest thing to get right — especially if enclosed spaces make you uneasy. Here's what Williamsburg Salt Spa runs, drawn from their own site and reviews.

🥚Float Pods

The classic enclosed capsule with a hinged lid. Deepest sensory deprivation; you lie down and pull the lid to.

Water & cleaning at Williamsburg Salt Spa

Sanitation is the thing seasoned floaters care about most, and most directories never show it. Between every float, the salt water should be pumped through fine filtration and disinfected — salt alone is not enough. From Williamsburg Salt Spa's own information: filters the full tank 5× between floats, down to a 1-micron filter, UV sterilization.

The float-industry standard is turning the entire volume of water over at least three times between sessions through a 1–10 micron filter, paired with UV and/or hydrogen peroxide or ozone. If a center doesn't publish its process, it's fair to ask.

From the reviews

I just returned from an afternoon at the Salt Spa, I'm not usually one to write a review but I really had a outstanding peaceful experience 😌 the staff was knowledgeable and caring and really went above and beyond to insure I was informed about the benefits of salt. I left feeling very relaxed and can't wait to return!

Williamsburg Salt Spa offers a relaxing escape that feels both calming and a little unique compared to your typical spa visit. The highlight, of course, is the salt therapy rooms - quiet, softly lit spaces where you can unwind while breathing in micronized salt air which many people find helpful for stress relief and…

If you are looking for a place to destress and relax, this is where to go. The massages I’ve received over the years here have all been amazing and each Massage Therapist always figures out exactly where I hold my stress and tension. I also did the float tank which was a very unique way to relax my whole body.

Yesterday I treated myself to the Body Renewal Cycle (Salt cave, infrared sauna, and float tank) and was such a relaxing experience overall. The ladies also have amazing teamwork to make you feel comfortable. Special shoutout to Ms. Natalie, who took care of me with the sauna and float tank sessions.

Your first float at Williamsburg Salt Spa

Never floated before? Almost no one has their first time, and a good center expects it. Here's what to know. What it is: you float effortlessly in about ten inches of skin-temperature water saturated with around 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt — so dense you cannot sink. In the dark and quiet, with no light, sound, or gravity to react to, your nervous system downshifts. Before you come: don't shave or wax for a day beforehand (salt stings fresh cuts — they'll have barrier ointment if you nick yourself), skip caffeine, eat a light meal an hour or two before, and remove contacts. If you colored your hair recently, wait a few days. In the tank: shower first, put earplugs in before you get wet, and keep a fresh-water spray bottle within reach for salt in the eyes. You can leave the light or music on until you settle, then turn them off from inside. Hold your arms out for the first 20–30 seconds to stop bobbing, then let go. It takes a few tries — the first 20 minutes are usually your mind winding down. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to shower and get oriented.

Floating isn't for everyone: skip it with epilepsy, kidney disease, uncontrolled heart conditions, open wounds, a contagious condition, or in the first trimester of pregnancy without your doctor's OK. If in doubt, ask the center and check with a physician — this is general information, not medical advice.
